The Rock refers as Jesus Christ as the person who we anchor our Faith. In terms of Scripture reference, the hymn was inspired by Deuteronomy 32:3-4 and Isaiah 26:4. Other tunes include "Redhead 76/Petra", by Richard Redhead or "New City Fellowship" by James Ward.

The preferred tune is "Toplady" by Thomas Hastings (1784-1872). After writing the hymn, it was published in The Gospel Magazine in 1775.

Back then, Toplady was a preacher in nearby Blagdon, and he found this incident as inspiration for this hymn. He found shelter inside the gorge of Burrington Combe in the Mendip Hills (England). Stories tell that Toplady wrote this hymn after being stuck in a storm. In actuality, it was hymn made by Augustus Montague Toplady (1740-1778). One casual look at the hymn and you will think it was a modern hymn or song. "Rock of the Ages" introduces us to the only Rock we'll ever need in our lives: Jesus Christ. Upon this Foundation, Be the "Rock of the Ages" When thinking about a rock, we are given an image of stability and an unrelenting foundation against harsh forces above our grasp.
